Audition Information

On behalf of Philip Magder (Chair of the Casting Committee), Marian Siminski (Musical Director), and Jonathan Curzi (Stage Director), LLO is pleased to provide you with the audition information for our 2012 productions of HMS Pinafore with Cox and Box. Please note that the page numbers that are listed in the Principal audition list, refer to the page numbers in the Internet Archive version of the opera. Using a Chappell or Kalmus version will have different page numbers. The links to the Internet Archive version are listed below.

Also, we are excited to announce that the role of Bouncer in Cox and Box will be open to women wishing to audition. Please note that this is traditionally a male role, however for this year’s auditions it will be possible for women to audition for this role. The role of Bouncer would be suited for an alto or mezzo-soprano.

The date of the auditions is Tuesday, September 13 at 7pm at the Church of St. John the Baptist in Pointe Claire (the usual rehearsal hall). Please note that this will be for both Chorus and Principal parts. Call-backs, which may be requested at the discretion of the Casting Committee, will be Friday September 16th at 8pm (also at St. John the Baptist).

Other information you need to know concerning the audition process:

1) Auditions are by appointment. Starting at 7 pm, three principal auditions will be scheduled in each 30 minute time period (additional slots may be allocated for Chorus auditions). Appointments can be made through Philip Magder (Chairman of the Casting Committee) by either e-mail (Contact Us) or by phone (514-804-4900).

2) Auditionees for the Chorus are required to sing a piece of their choice (please bring sheet music if you wish to be accompanied) and preferably from G&S.

3) Principal auditionees are required to sing the designated principal audition solo pieces of only one role regardless of how many roles you are auditioning for in a voice part. However, if you are auditioning for a soprano and an alto role (or a tenor and bass) then you would sing twice. There will also be parts from the libretto to be spoken. Both required singing pieces and spoken libretto parts are listed below.

4) As a reminder, the role of the Bouncer in Cox and Box will be open to women wishing to audition.

5) At the discretion of the Casting Committee, you may be required to return for a Call-back. This will occur on Friday, September 16th, from 7pm – 10pm. In this case, the harmony pieces as listed in the audition list will be required to be sung. Two or more candidates will sing together as there are duos, trios and quartets.

Please direct all inquiries to Philip Magder, Chairman of the Casting Committee, at (514) 804-4900 or Contact Us.

Lakeshore Light Opera will be performing the Savoy version of COX and BOX, not the Original version. Anyone having already practiced the original version, will still be accepted and auditioners will not be penalized.
